Move install to secure directory or.....

Hi All,

I have WHMCS installed into my regular http directory and, in hindsight, wondering if I should have installed it into the https directory.

What would be the advantage of doing this compared to relying on SSL?

Also are there any pitfalls when changing the entire install directory?

Can it simply be moved and all links updated?

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Ozmo...

I personally have my WHMCS install in a sub-directory. Regardless of where the WHMCS dir is located in respect to the site root. You should still use an SSL cert. I believe MacSCR in the forums has published an excellent script that will only use SSL when it's needed. Works great too.

But don't try and use this user contributed mod with V3 as the feature is built in.

So is there no real advantage in having my install in a secure directory?

Is it safe to say that the SSL feature with V.3 will be security enough?

Incidently I do have my install in a sub-directory under my http directory.. I just forgot to mention that early. :)

Hi ozmo,

As Roger has done, we have setup whmcs in a sub directory and not in the root folder. We have purchased SSL to secure that folder, so that any information will be safe with encryption that get's passed. I would definitely recommend getting SSL to protect you and your customers information.

Our whmcs folder is the same folder, only difference is the "s" in https. When someone is just looking at the knowledgebase, they view it in http. When someone wants to place an order WHMCS automatically changes the address to https. Works great and seamless.

So, yes there is a real advantage to securing you WHMCS with SSL. You still have to buy the SSL certificate, but when you do WHMCS handles it flawlessly.

SSL is not required to use WHMCS, but I believe it a necessary component when your customers are important, in our case we believe it is.

I hope that answers your question.
