Sorry, it was my stupidity. The URL box wasn't completely empty. Once I deleted http:// from the box I enabled IPN without a problem.

When setting up a PayPal payment gateway, I received the following usage note: "Usage Notes: You should enable IPN in your PayPal account and leave the URL blank" When I try to do that, I get the following PayPal error message: "You must enter a properly formatted URL into the Notification URL field in order to activate Instant Payment Notification." Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, what is the solution?
